Introduction:
“The Future of Us” is a romantic comedy. It is written by Jay Asher and Cardyn Mackler. I believe that it is a clever, timely story that will attract any teen with a Facebook account since the story is related to technology.
Summary:
In 1996, and less than half of All American high school students have ever used the Internet. Emma just got her first computer and an America Online CD-ROM. Josh is her best friend and next-door neighbor. They power up and log on – and discover themselves on Facebook, fifteen years in the future.
My opinion of the book + examples:
The book is mysterious as Emma and Josh suddenly discover themselves on Facebook, fifteen years in the future. However, Facebook wasn’t even invented in 1996. So how come Emma and Josh already have Facebook profiles – with photos that look like themselves 15 years in the future? Also, the book is warming the future with their experiences in the present, they sepculate about the extent to which the actions they take now, from spilling juice on the carpet to kissing their best friend to keep the good friendship forever.
Things you have learned / the reasons why you recommend the book:
This book suits teenagers’ tastes. As teenagers nowadays probably don’t remember what it’s like not to have a cell phone or constant access to a computer, an MP3 player and Internet in any of its countless forms. So the people who read this book can do reflection on using Internet in a correct way.
